Nazia
Nazia is a three year old girl from Gardez Afghanistan. In April 2008, at the age of 2, Nazia swallowed a battery. By the time she was brought to US doctors at the Craig Theater Hospital at Bagram Airfield, the battery had corroded, and caused extensive damage to her esophogus and airway. Numerous surgeries have been performed in attepts to dilate her airway, but none have been successful. She is dependant on her tracheostomy tube for breathing, and has a stent in place to allow her to swallow. Her vocal chords are fused and she cannot speak. The air in Afghanistan is extremely dusty, and each time she is discharged from the hospital, she returns in a week to ten days with respiratory problems and infection. Upon returning to the hospital and clean air, her condition improves dramatically within just a few hours.
Nazia's survival requires complicated corrective surgery that cannot be performed in Afghanistan. This procedure and the post operative recovery and rehabilitation need to be done in a pediatric hospital by pediatric specialists. Cincinnati Childrens Hospital has agreed to conduct the surgery and post operative care.
MiracleKids has been asked to raise the money for the family's travel and housing expenses, estimated to be $20,000. We hope that you will find it in your heart to be a part of this project and give this little girl a chance to grow up and live a normal life.
Please consider making a donation to save little Nazia's life.
To donate to Nazia's travel fund, please go to www.cincinnatichildrens.org/nazia. When filling out the form, there are two funds you can donate to. The Cincinnati Children's Charitable Care Fund is used by the hospital to care for all children like Nazia who are unable to obtain needed medical care. The other fund is Nazia's fund, and that fund will cover the travel and housing expenses for her and her family.
Although all donations are sincerely appreciated, we would like to encourage you to donate to Nazia's fund as this will ensure that she is able to travel to the United States to receive the operation she needs. Please select Nazia's Fund from the designation drop down list. Please note, that under current IRS regulations, donations to this travel fund are not tax deductable.
